Reporting (Neutral Information)

Reporting Is Your Choice.

Reporting an assault to law enforcement is a personal decision and is not required to access support, medical care, or to explore civil legal options.

If you are considering reporting, a confidential advocate (such as those at HAWC or RAINN) can walk you through what to expect and, if you wish, accompany you.

Nothing on this page is intended to pressure you toward or away from any particular decision. The choices are yours.

Preserving Information

If You Might Want to Explore Options Later.

If there is any chance you may want to explore civil legal options in the future, it can help to preserve information now — even if you're not ready to act on it.

Consider keeping, in a safe and private place:

  • A written account of what happened, in your own words and timeline
  • Photographs
  • Communications — texts, emails, messages
  • Names and contact information of any witnesses
  • Any medical or counseling documentation

You do not need to share any of this with anyone until you are ready — and you are not required to keep it at all. This is simply offered in case it is useful to you.

Civil Legal Options

Exploring a Civil Claim.

A civil legal claim is separate from the criminal justice process. It is one possible path — not a required one. You can learn about civil options without filing anything, and you can decide whether and when to move forward.

If you'd like to understand what civil legal options may be available, Catherine provides confidential, survivor-centered guidance.

You set the pace.

Starting a Conversation

Questions You Can Ask an Attorney

You don't have to share your story to start a conversation. It's okay to begin by asking questions like these:

  • What does an initial conversation involve?
  • How is privacy and confidentiality handled?
  • What are the possible legal options in my situation?
  • What would the process look like, and how long might it take?
  • What are the deadlines that might apply?
  • Do I have to decide right now whether to move forward?
Supporting Someone Else

If Someone You Know Has Been Assaulted.

Listening without judgment is one of the most powerful things you can do. Let the survivor lead the conversation and the decisions. Avoid pressing for details or for a particular course of action.

You can offer to help connect them with a confidential hotline or local advocacy organization, and you can offer to be present if they choose to seek medical care or speak with someone.

But their choices — including the choice to do nothing right now — deserve respect.
